David Caldwell Barefoot, 76, passed away on September 8, 2012, at Rex Hospital in Raleigh, North Carolina. He was born to Graham Ballard Barefoot and Elizabeth Murray Barefoot on February 5, 1936 in Wilmington, North Carolina.

David is survived by his wife of 47 years, Rebecca (Becky) Matthews Barefoot, and their children David Caldwell Barefoot, Jr,. (and his wife Sara), Lawana Jane Barefoot, Rebecca Barefoot Cumby (and her husband Rick), and Jennifer Barefoot Glatthaar (and her husband Joe), grandchildren David Caldwell Barefoot, III, Anna Blake Glatthaar, Turner Matthews Barefoot, Zollie Augustus Barefoot, James Michael Glatthaar, Mary Elizabeth Rhodes Cumby, Warren Francis Glatthaar, and David Worth Cumby, his sister, Roxana Barefoot Miller, brother-in-law Murrell O. Matthews, III (and wife Beth), sister-in-law Emily Barefoot, Betty Barefoot, Jane Barefoot and Carolyn Havey. He was preceded in death by sister Mary Elizabeth Barefoot Lilly, and his brothers Graham Ballard Barefoot, Jr., Napoleon Bonaparte Barefoot, and Duncan Murray Barefoot. He left behind many cousins, nephews and nieces.

David was a graduate of New Hanover High School and went on to finish undergraduate and law school at Wake Forest University. In between his undergraduate and law school years at Wake Forest, David spent four years in the Navy. He and Becky spent their first year of marriage in New York while he studied at NYU Law School. Afterwards David and Becky returned to Wilmington where he practiced law for 46 years. During his legal career, David practiced first for many years with Burney, Burney, Barefoot and Bain, and subsequently with Barefoot and Kaufman, 12 years of solo practice, and Manning, Fulton and Skinner before proudly finishing his legal career with Smith Moore Leatherwood where he practiced until his recent illness.

Although David was very active in the community, including as past president of the New Hanover County Bar, the center of his life was his church, his family, and his friends. From birth he attended St. Andrews-Covenant Presbyterian Church where he taught Sunday School and served as a deacon and elder. His deep faith was expressed always in his daily living. He loved his family and friends and his happiest times were spent with family, especially when they all gathered for Thanksgiving, and with his friends at Black River for the annual hunt. He was a man without pretention and had an inherent sweetness that drew people to him. He will be loved and missed by many.
